This relaxing Tokyo walking tour takes you through one of the city’s most atmospheric destinations, with towering trees, traditional Torii gates, quiet pathways and the beautiful grounds of this historic Shinto shrine.
Meiji Shrine is located near Harajuku. It was built in 1920, following the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912 and the death of Empress Shoken in 1914. To commemorate the Emperor and Empress, the Japanese Diet (parliament) passed a resolution to celebrate their leadership.
Emperor Meiji led the Meiji Restoration, which started in the 1880s and transformed Japan from an isolated feudal society into a modern, industrialized nation-state. The shrine’s forest contains approximately 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, creating a remarkable green space in the heart of the city.
